This project is about people’s struggle with mental health issues, more specifically whatever it is they do to help manage it.
This could be in the form of medication and therapy, 5 quiet minutes with a cup of tea, running ultra-marathons, meditation, or a space or place to lose themselves in. It could be anything (good or bad however we perceive that) but the point is for that period of time things feel okay.
The project needs volunteers who are happy to talk openly about their mental health and willing to sit for a photograph. If you would like to be involved in this I’d love to hear from you. If not, but you know somebody that might, please feel free to forward this to them or even print it out and stick it to a notice board.
As somebody dealing with these issues, the desire to make this work comes from a personal place. I’d like to learn more about it from others, open up the conversations around mental health and try to increase the knowledge and awareness for myself and the wider society generally. Talking and sharing seems to be a pretty good way to do this. Hopefully the more open we are the more we can help ourselves and the stigmas that surround it can be reduced.
I’m intending to avoid the usual forlorn imagery associated with mental health conditions by concentrating on the more positive moments of progress and management, however brief. Below are some of the pictures made so far.
